Sir,
July, 1900.
I am directed by the Secretary of State for
War to forward a copy of an application which has been
received from certain Civilian Subordinates employed
in the Army Service Corps Department at Hong Kong, asking
that the rates of pay of which they are in receipt,
which were settled some years ago, may now be reviewed
and increased, on the ground of the great rise in
house rent, and the general increase of prices locally.
In view of the statement in the General
Officer
Command ing's covering minute that increases
have lately been given to Civilians employed in the
Colonial Department at Hong Kong, I am to request
that you will be good enough to move Mr Secretary
Chamberlain to cause Lord Lansdowne to be furnished at
the earliest convenient date, with particulars of the
increases granted to Colonial Department subordinates
in a similar position to those now under consideration
as it appears to him desirable that these classes
should be dealt with in a uniform manner.
I am to add that a similar communication has
been
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial office.
